Exterior Oak & Render Restoration

Restoring heavily weathered oak half-timbering and transforming previously unpainted render with a complete exterior finishing system, Chelmsford

Overview

This exterior restoration and redecoration project focused on two very different surfaces: the property's exposed oak half-timbering and its previously unpainted rendered elevations.

The oak had become heavily weathered over time, while the bare render required a complete preparation and coating system from scratch. The aim was to protect both surfaces while retaining the natural character that makes the property distinctive.

The Brief

Years of exposure had left much of the oak with a faded, silvered appearance. Bringing it back required considerably more than simply applying another coating over the weathered surface.

The rendered elevations presented a different challenge. As they were completely bare and had never previously been decorated, they required the correct preparation and sealing before any finishing coats could be applied.

Before We Started

The oak half-timbering was carefully sanded back to remove the silvered and weathered surface, revealing clean, sound timber underneath.

This was an important part of the restoration. Rather than trying to disguise the weathering with a surface coating, the preparation allowed the natural appearance of the oak itself to be recovered while providing a suitable base for protection.

The bare rendered elevations were also properly prepared before being primed and sealed ready for their new exterior coating system.

Preparation & Repairs

The Work

Once the oak had been prepared, multiple coats of Osmo oil were applied to protect the timber and enhance its natural appearance. The oak was carefully sanded and de-nibbed between coats where required, gradually building a smooth, refined finish while retaining the grain, variation and character of the original timber.

The previously bare render was primed and sealed before receiving two full coats of exterior masonry paint, creating an even and consistent finish across the elevations.

Working with the two materials separately allowed each to receive the preparation and finishing system appropriate to the surface rather than treating the exterior as a single decorating job.

The Finished Result

The completed exterior retains the character of the property's original oak detailing while giving the elevations a much cleaner and more refined appearance.

Sanding the weathered oak back rather than covering it restored much of its natural warmth, colour and grain. Against the freshly decorated render, the restored timber now creates a strong architectural contrast and once again becomes a defining feature of the property.

The finished photographs show the transformation across several elevations, together with close-up details of the restored oak and entrance porch.
