Why Is Preparation So Important Before Painting?

A high-quality decorating finish starts long before the paint tin is opened.

Preparation is what creates the smooth, stable surface that the finished coating relies on. If cracks, movement, failing previous coatings or damaged surfaces are simply painted over, those problems are likely to remain visible or reappear later.

Depending on the property, preparation can involve filling and sanding walls, repairing damaged plaster, removing poorly adhered coatings, stabilising moving woodwork, treating knots and resin, caulking junctions, priming bare surfaces and sanding between coats.

We've encountered projects where visible cracks were actually being caused by movement behind architraves or staircase components. Simply filling the crack would make it disappear temporarily, but wouldn't solve the underlying problem. Stabilising the moving timber first creates a much better foundation for the finished decoration.

The same principle applies to previously painted surfaces. Heavy paint build-up, runs, poor adhesion and surface imperfections don't disappear because another coat has been applied. They need to be corrected during preparation.

It's also why preparation can account for a surprisingly large proportion of a professional decorating project.

The final coat is what everybody sees. The preparation underneath is what makes it look good.
